Summer of ’69

Here’s another edition of the Thursday Evening Post. πŸŽ΅

This week it has sure felt like autumn! πŸƒ

It’s okay though because autumn’s my favorite season! 🧑

Since autumn doesn’t officially start until a few weeks from now, it’ll be curious to see if any more summer weather returns. 😎

I LOVE songs that tell stories! πŸ“–

There was a song that I heard in the car yesterday that I know I’ve heard dozens of times, but I had never listened to the story being told in the song.

The song was Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ’69.”

Lyrics:

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the Five and Dime
Played it ’til my fingers bled
Was the summer of ’69

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit, Jody got married
Should’ve known we’d never get far

Oh, when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I’d always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life
Hey!

Ain’t no use in complainin’
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenings down at the drive-in
And that’s when I met you, yeah

Standin’ on your mama’s porch
You told me that you’d wait forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Oh, yeah
Back in the summer of ’69, ohh

Man, we were killin’ time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothing can last forever
Forever, no!
Yeah!

And now the times are changin’
Look at everything that’s come and gone
Sometimes, when I play that old six-string
Think about you, wonderin’ what went wrong

Standin’ on your mama’s porch
You told me that it’d last forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Oh, yeah
Back in the summer of ’69, uh-huh
It was the summer of ’69, oh, yeah
Me and my baby in ’69, ohh, ho!
It was the summer, summer, summer of ’69
Yeah

What do you think of the song?

This song sure seems like it would be a fun one to play! πŸ˜ƒ

I like how the beginning of the song tells a story about how the main character and his friends were in a band which was started because he got his first guitar. 🎸

What was the first instrument you ever got?

My first guitar was an acoustic electric, but when I got my electric guitar, I was excited that I could rock out! πŸ€˜πŸ»πŸ˜‰

I think the lyrics throughout the song are so creative! For example, I like how through “Five and Dime,” you learn that the main character got his guitar for really cheap, and through “played it ’til my fingers bled,” you learn how passionate the main character was about music at that point in his life.

The rest of the song cleverly tells a story about someone he fell in love with and how he doesn’t understand why they didn’t end up together. Can you relate?

Even though he didn’t end up with this person, he still considers the moments he spent with this person the best time of his life. ❀️

Is there a specific summer that you consider to be the best summer of your life?

I look forward to enjoying the rest of summer even if it’s a little cooler than usual. 😁

May you be well! πŸ’š
