I’m Your Moon

Here’s another edition of the Thursday Evening Post. 😄

Last week, I wrote about a song that was written about Pluto that I had learned about through The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I recently finished the book and LOVED it!

Neil deGrasse Tyson references another song about Pluto in his book, Jonathan Coulton’s “I’m Your Moon.”

It’s a song that Charon, Pluto’s moon, sings to Pluto. Check it out:

Lyrics:

They invented a reason
That’s why it stings
They don’t think you matter
Because you don’t have pretty rings
I keep telling you I don’t mind
I keep saying there’s one thing they can’t change
I’m your moon, you’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me you will always remember who you are
Let them shuffle the numbers
Watch them come and go
We’re the ones who are out here
Out past the edge of what they know
You can only be who you are
Doesn’t matter if they don’t understand
I’m your moon, you’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me you will always remember who you are
Who you were
Long before
They said you were no more
Sad excuse for a sunrise
It’s so cold out here
Ice and silence and dark skies
As we go round another year
Let them think what they like, we’re fine
I will always be right here next to you
I’m your moon, you’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me you will always remember who you are

This rock, located at the UW-Madison Geology Museum, contains debris from an asteroid that hit Earth 1.85 billion years ago.

It’s such a beautiful song!

If I hadn’t known what this song was about before I listened to it, I would have assumed this song was filled with metaphors to demonstrate someone’s care for another. ❤️

I appreciate Neil deGrasse Tyson’s humor as he analyzed this song. He says that his “favorite part of the song resembles what might transpire in a self-help therapy session:

Promise me you will always remember who you are
Who you were
Long before
They said you were no more

🤣 What do you think of that section?

Neil deGrasse Tyson adds, “These are surely the most sensitive words ever shared between two inanimate cosmic objects.”😂

How do you like the song?

I’m excited to have learned SO MUCH about Pluto from Neil deGrasse Tyson’s book!

I had NO IDEA that people had written songs about Pluto once Pluto was being considered for a demotion! 😯

I love learning new things! ❤️

May you be well! 💜
