Behind the Song: “Hunger”

Last week, I shared my latest original song with you:

Lyrics:

©2017 Allison Merten

I’m so hungry. Yes, I am. Yes, I am for your love- For your love.

Oh I long for-yes, I long. Yes, I long for your kiss. Oh those lips.

Feed my hunger. Make me your very own.

Please feed-feed my hunger.

Make me your own.

I crave-yes, I crave. Yes, I crave your attention. Come on and give it to me.

Oh I yearn for-yes, I yearn. Yes, I yearn for you to whisper in my ear that I’m the only one you’ve been waiting for.

Feed my hunger. Make me your very own.

Please feed-feed my hunger.

Make me your own.

Longing for your love you’re all I desire. I’ve got only thoughts of you on my mind.

Longing for your love you’re all I desire. I’ve got only thoughts of you on my mind.

Longing for your love you’re all I desire. I’ve got only thoughts of you on my mind.

Feed my hunger. Make me your very own.

Please feed-feed my hunger.

Make me your own.

“Hunger” is a song that I started writing last year. Most people like to listen to the radio when they are driving, but I like to work on songs. 🙂 “Hunger” is a song that I started “writing” when I was driving in the car one day. Because I was driving, of course I do not mean that I was actually writing down the words of the song. Rather, the words to the first verse came to me as I was driving. Each time I went for a drive, I started singing the words I had already come up with over and over until I could add more to the song.

Sometimes I write lyrics at the same time as I write guitar parts. However, since the lyrics for “Hunger” were almost entirely created while I was driving, it took me a long time to find the right guitar chords and strum patterns to fit the emotion I was trying to express through this song.

“Hunger” is a song about how consuming love is. When you find the person that you want to be with, that person becomes an essential need. You are unable to focus because all you really want is to have this person share the same feelings that you have for that person. Until that person gives you that, you will feel incomplete.

Although I had hoped to be able to share this song with you last year, sometimes songwriting takes a long time, and a song can’t be shared until it feels “ready.”

I hope you enjoyed “Hunger.” 🙂

Thoughts? Please post them :-)
