Happy April! 🐰

The start of another season is a great time to try something new, and this past weekend I had a blast making bread from scratch for the first time with my friends.

We made classic white bread, Japanese milk bread, and herb and cheese Irish soda bread. They were DELICIOUS! 🤤

This past weekend was also April Fools’ Day. Did you play any pranks on anyone? Did you succeed at making anyone laugh?

As a kid, I remember doing April Fools’ pranks but unintentionally making people angry as opposed to making them laugh. 🤣

Do you know why we celebrate April Fools’ Day?

I came across the NPR article “April Fools’ Day might be the world’s longest-running joke. No one knows how it began,” and was surprised to learn that there is a lot of mystery around its origin. Some historians speculate that in Europe during the Renaissance, people celebrated the holiday, while others speculate it began in France in the 16th century as a result of the transition to the Gregorian calendar from the Julian calendar.

The article states, “The Julian calendar began in March with the spring equinox and was celebrated until April 1. By switching to the Gregorian calendar, the new year would now begin on Jan. 1. News traveled slowly back then, and not everyone knew about or was willing to change when to celebrate the new year. Those who continued to celebrate in the spring were often ridiculed and made the butt of jokes.”

One of the most entertaining parts of this article was that one of the ways that people pranked others during this time was by putting a fish made of paper on someone’s back. 😁

The article ends with the statement, “Although we may never know its true origins, April 1 has come to represent a day of joy and comedy as we move out of the darkness of winter and into the spring.” I LOVE the idea of using laughter to move us “out of the darkness of winter.” 💚 Winter can feel SOOOOOO long! 😩

Laughter is so POWERFUL and can easily make a challenging day a little bit better.

Someone who has been creatively making people laugh for decades is “Weird Al” Yankovic.

I enjoy many of his songs, but one song (and video) that makes me laugh is “Tacky.”
