Isn’t it so interesting how listening to a song can bring back so many memories?
I recently heard the 1979 song “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc. on the radio and had this happen to me.
Lyrics:
Gotta make a move to a town that’s right for me
Town to keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy
Well, I talk about it, talk about it
Talk about it, talk about it
Talk about, talk about
Talk about movin’
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
A-won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Gotta make a move to a town that’s right for me
Town to keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy
Well, I talk about it, talk about it
Talk about it, talk about it
Talk about, talk about
Talk about movin’
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
A-won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me to Funkytown?
Won’t you take me down to Funkytown?

As soon as I heard this song, I remembered how I had learned it on my flute for band class in preparation for our band trip to Walt Disney World.
I remember my favorite part of playing this song was when the flute section played the high notes because that was when our section could really be heard. π€£
This song also reminded me of how my classmates and I learned how to disco dance in middle school.
During a disco unit in music class, our teacher had us get up and dance to this song using the disco moves she was teaching us. π
I specifically remember learning “the shopping cart” and “the lawnmower.” I don’t know any other disco moves. Do you?
What do you think of “Funkytown”?
Is there a particular way you like to dance to the song when you hear it?
“Funkytown” is always such a fun song to dance to!
I had a fun time looking at the lyrics for this song because I never knew what the words were before the “Well, I talk about it, talk about it” section.π
This was the first time I watched the music video for this song, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Those ladies looked like they were having a blast!π
I hope this week’s song got you dancing a bit. πΊπ»
Wishing you well! π

There was another disco move called The Sprinkler. π
I had a similar flashback experience recently…I saw the phrase “one singular sensation” when I was reading something online and was immediately transported back to middle school chorus when we sang a medley of songs from A Chorus Line.
I’ve often said that listening to the music of my younger years is like taking a sip from the fountain of youth.
I’m sure I danced to Funkytown many times on the dance floor over the years π
Enjoy the weekend!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Dawn! π The “sprinkler” sounds familiar. I think we also learned that one during music class! π That is amazing that you just saw one phrase and went back in time to middle school. Music is so neat! I love that you said that listening to music from when you were younger is like “taking a sip from the fountain of youth.” π It absolutely is!
