Sinners

Here’s another edition of the Thursday Evening Post. 😃
This week I saw the film Sinners.

Before I saw the film, I didn’t know much about it other than that it was a supernatural film that starred the talented Michael B. Jordan.

The film was PHENOMENAL! 😲

The costumes were exquisite!

The characters were so rich!

The story was so detailed!

The sets were so creative!

The acting was INCREDIBLE!

The music was UTTERLY fantastic!

So that you can get an idea of how AMAZING the music was, check out “I Lied to You.”

Lyrics:

Something I been wanting to tell you
For a long time
It might hurt you
Hope you don’t lose your mind
Well, I was just a boy
‘Bout eight years old
You threw me a Bible
On that Mississippi road
See, I love ya, Papa
You did all you could do
They say the truth hurts
So I lied to you
Yes, I lied to you
I love the blues
Mm-mm
Oh
Mm-mm
Hey
Somebody take me in your arms tonight
Well alright
Somebody take me in your arms tonight
Yeah, yeah
Somebody take me in your arms tonight
Mm-hmm
Oh
Mm-mm
Somebody take me in your arms tonight
Alright
Somebody take me in your arms tonight, oh
Somebody take me in your
I hope you can stand it
Stand it all
‘Cause what l’m out here doing
You didn’t preach at all
See, I’m full of the blues, holy water too
I know the truth hurts
So I lie to you
So preach on
Speak your words
I know the truth hurts
Yes, I lied to you
I love the blues
I love the blues
Mm-hmm
Mm-hmm
Mm-hmm
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, hey, oh
Mm-hmm
I know the truth hurts
Hey
Lied to you
Somebody take me in your arms
Hey
Mm, mm

What a song! Right? 😮

To experience a sound much different than that—yet also incredible!—check out “Rocky Road to Dublin.”

Lyrics:

Then off to reap the corn
And leave where I was born
I cut a stout black thorn
For to banish ghosts and goblins
A brand-new pair of brogues
To rattle over the bogs
And frightened all the dogs
On the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Well, in the merry month of May, from me home I started
Left, the girls of Tuam were nearly broken-hearted
Saluted father dear
Kissed me darling mother
Drank a pint of beer, my grief and tears to smother
Then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born
Cut a stout black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins
Brand-new pair of brogues, rattling over the bogs
And frightened all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
In Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary
Started by daylight next morning, bright and airy
Took a drop of the pure to keep me heart from sinkin′
That’s the Paddy′s cure whenever he’s on for drinkin’
To hear the lassies smile, laughin′ all the while
At me curious style, it would set your heart a-bubblin′
Asked me was I hired, wages I required
‘Til I was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity
To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city
Then I took a stroll, all among the quality
Bundle it was stole, in a neat locality
Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind
No bundle could I find upon me stick a-wobblin′
“Enquiring for the rogue,” said me Connaught brogue
Wasn’t much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
From there I got away, my spirits never failin′
Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailin’
Captain at me roared, said that no room had he
When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy
Down among the pigs, played some funny rigs
Danced some hearty jigs, the water ′round me bubblin’
Off to Holyhead, wished me-self was dead
Or better far instead, on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed
Called me-self a fool, I could no longer stand it
Blood began to boil, temper I was losin’
Poor old Erin′s Isle, they began abusin′
“Hurrah me soul,” says I, shillelagh I let fly
Galway boys were by and saw I was a-hobblin’
With a loud “Hurray!” joinin′ in the affray
We quickly cleared the way on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack-follol-le-dah!

I thought it would be fitting to add a photo from my trip to Ireland. 🍀

I find it SO IMPRESSIVE how fast the lyrics are in “Rocky Road to Dublin!” 😲

I LOVED the variety of music in this film!

Which of these two songs do you prefer and why?
