Come a Little Bit Closer

Here’s another edition of the  Thursday Evening Post. 🎶

I recently rewatched Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. 🌠 (I’m slowly working my way through all of the movies from the original Avengers universe to get ready for Avengers: Doomsday this December! 🤓)

I forgot how hilarious Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is! 🤣

Drax is my favorite character in that movie because he is so FUNNY! 😂

Who’s your favorite?

I love the AMAZING soundtracks for the Guardian of the Galaxy films!

I’ve had “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay & The Americans stuck in my head. 🎵

Lyrics:

In a little café, just the other side of the border
She was, uh, sitting there givin’ me looks that make my mouth water
So I started walking her way
She belonged to badman José
And I knew, yes I knew I should leave
Then I heard her say, ye-yeah
“Come a little bit closer, you’re my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I’m all alone and the night is so long”
So we started to dance, in my arms, she felt so inviting
And I just couldn’t resist, uh, just one little kiss, so exciting
Then I heard the guitar player say
“Vamos, José’s on his way”
And I knew, yes, I knew I should run
But then I heard her say, ye-yeah
“Come a little bit closer, you’re my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I’m all alone and the night is so long”
Then the music stopped, when I looked, the café was empty
Then I heard José say, “Man, you know you’re in trouble plenty”
So I dropped my drink from my hand
And through the window, I ran
And as I rode away
I could hear her say to José, ye-yeah
“Come a little bit closer, you’re my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I’m all alone and the night is so long”
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Oh-oh-oh
I still hear her say
Calling her name

I had heard “Come a Little Bit Closer” on oldies stations in the past, but I had never listened closely to the words until this week’s post.

I was surprised that the song was about a guy trying to win over a woman who already has a boyfriend. 😯

I thought it was humorous at the end of the song that the guy escapes through a window when the woman’s boyfriend shows up. 😆

The story the lyrics paint doesn’t seem to match the scene the song is paired with in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2! 🤣

In the film, the scene has nothing to do with trying to pursue someone who is already in a relationship; rather, this song is played in order to taunt others.

This song plays when Yondu begins drawing out his enemies to seek revenge on them for mutinying against him—seemingly a way to create humor in a dark scene.

What do you think about the use of this song in a scene that isn’t about romance?

It’s always fun to think about song choices in films. 😊

May you be well! 💜
