When I tell people I am working on my first album, they always ask, “What kind of music do you play?” I feel so silly when they ask this question because I never know how to respond. I usually say, “Ummm…well…I’m not actually sure.”
You probably think this sounds really strange. How can I not know what kind of music I play?
It’s hard for me to determine what genre my music is, and I think this is because I like so many different artists who can be categorized in very different genres. I feel that I express my love for so many genres through the music that I create.
If you have read my blog post about why I started writing music, you will know that I absolutely love Hanson. Hanson’s rock/pop songs are usually super upbeat, and I love dancing to them! Although my songs often might not be upbeat, I like to create music that people want to move to.
What I’m going to say next is what surprises some people. I also love heavy metal. I especially like Rammstein. Rammstein is an extremely creative band that uses music to express pain, sarcasm, sadness, criticisms, etc.
(On a side note, Rammstein is very entertaining to watch live in concert! If you like heavy metal along with fire, you should definitely see Rammstein live! 🙂 Rammstein’s concert at the Allstate Arena, in Illinois this past May, was absolutely amazing!)
Although I don’t consider my songs heavy metal, I feel that I take the anger or pain that is often expressed in heavy metal and apply it to my music in my own way.
On my YouTube Channel, I have posted acoustic versions of my songs. By listening to them, you might be able to figure out what genre my music is classified as. However, once I finish recording my album and you hear the other instruments added to my songs, you might change your mind.
Maybe I’ll just keep everyone guessing 😉
