Mr. Crowley

It’s getting closer and closer to Halloween! 🎃

What are you favorite Halloween-related activities to do in October?

I’m looking forward to going to a pumpkin farm this weekend—provided the weather holds up. 🤞

Have you been enjoying listening to spooky tunes this month? 👻 I sure have. 😁

The Halloween-related song for this week is Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mr. Crowley.”

Lyrics:

Mr. Crowley, what went on in your head?
Oh Mr. Crowley, did you talk to the dead?
Your lifestyle to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magic
Yeah, you waited on Satan’s call
Mr. Charming, did you think you were pure?
Mr. Alarming, in nocturnal rapport
Uncovering things that were sacred
Manifest on this Earth
Ah, conceived in the eye of a secret
And they scattered the afterbirth
Mr. Crowley, won’t you ride my white horse?
Mr. Crowley, it’s symbolic of course
Approaching a time that is classic
I hear maiden’s call
Approaching a time that is drastic
Standing with their backs to the wall
Was it polemically sent?
I wanna know what you meant
I wanna know
I wanna know what you meant, yeah

I had been unfamiliar with this song until someone had recommended that I do a cover of it. I had SO MUCH fun learning this song (especially learning the synthesizer intro on my guitar! 🤓).

I got to perform my cover of it for the first time when I performed at Hop Haus Brewing Co. this past August, and it was a BLAST! 😊

Prior to learning this song, I didn’t know who Mr. Crowley was.

Thanks to a Britannica article, now I do. 😜

The song refers to Aleister Crowley, a British man who practiced the occult arts and was largely notorious during his lifetime for this. In 1923, he was labeled the “wickedest man in the world” after one of his followers died presumably after engaging in a blasphemous ritual.

There is much more about him in the article I referenced, so please check it out if you are interested in learning more.

What do you think of the lyrics to the song?

I find it very interesting when a song tells a story about a person and/or event that I am unfamiliar with prior to hearing the song.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s Halloween-related tune! 🦇

Wishing you well! 🧡
