Do you ever get a song stuck in your head and find yourself annoying the people around you because you can’t stop whistling it?
Well, that’s what I’ve been doing this week. 🤣
I recently heard the song “Oh Sherrie” on the radio, and I remembered hearing that song a lot on the radio growing up. The chorus is SO CATCHY! I remember singing along to the “Oh Sherrie” and “hold on” parts because that’s all I knew. 😉
This week was actually the first time I learned that the song is sung by Steve Perry.
I hadn’t been aware that Steve Perry had left Journey and gone solo during the 80s. According to the RollingStone in “Flashback: Steve Perry Declares His Love for ‘Oh Sherrie,’” “‘Oh Sherrie’ – the first single from his 1984 solo debut Street Talk – was written in honor of his real-life girlfriend Sherrie Swafford.”
Here’s the song:
Lyrics:
You should’ve been gone
Knowing how I made you feel
And I should’ve been gone
After all your words of steel
Oh, I must’ve been a dreamer
And I must’ve been someone else
And we should’ve been over (over now)
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, I want to let go
You’ll go on hurtin’ me
You’d be better off alone
If I’m not who you thought I’d be
But you know that there’s a fever
Oh, that you’ll never find nowhere else (nowhere else)
Can’t you feel it burnin’
On and on (on and on)
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, Sherrie
But I should’ve been gone
Long ago, far away
And you should’ve been gone
Now I know you’d lie, you’ll stay
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on, holds on
Oh, Sherrie, our love
Holds on (Sherrie), holds on
Hold on
Oh, Sherrie

It’s funny when you look at the lyrics for the first time and realize you’ve been singing something wrong. I see the words are “holds on” not “hold on.” 😋 I also had never known what he sang right before “holds on.” Now I do! 😁
I was curious about the way the music video started out. In the aforementioned article, I learned that “In this post-Thriller era, music videos were getting increasingly elaborate, which Perry mocked by beginning the clip dressed as a prince in an ancient church before ripping the crown off and telling the director it had nothing to do with the song.”
I also found it interesting that the woman featured in the music video is actually Sherrie Swafford!
I really enjoy learning what inspires artists to write their songs, and I thought it was so neat that the inspiration for the song was actually featured in the music video!
I hope this week’s song gets stuck in your head too! 🤣
Wishing you well! ❤️
