The Better Part of Bravery

Here’s another edition of the Thursday Evening Post. 🍃

The warm weather has disappeared, and it’s been cold and windy lately here in Wisconsin, which seems appropriate for November! 🤣

A great thing to do when it’s cold outside is go see a film! 🤓

I LOVE watching studio Laika films because they are artistic masterpieces! ❤️

It fills me with awe when I think about how much work it takes to make just one scene in their films, let alone an ENTIRE movie! 😲

I was very eager to watch their latest film Wildwood.

Have you seen it?

The film was an adaption of Colin Meloy’s book Wildwood.

The film presented many themes for the viewer to reflect on regarding sacrifice, morality, ambition, and moving forward.

The film ends with a beautiful song called “The Better Part of Bravery,” which is by The Decemberists—Colin Meloy’s band.

Lyrics:

Once, when I was younger
I thought I saw something linger
Bold white spark, some bright kicking thing
Oh, what dark reward did that vision bring
But I was young and I was headstrong
I thought life just stayed overlong
Heave a breath caught deep in my lungs
Oh, what daydream hours did I live among
And in the twilit light
When the stars were the only light
Turned to look again and it had gone
Leaving me to ponder on
The better part of bravery
Is in the letting go
Is in the letting go
So I went on, so I rambled
Through the day, through each revel
‘Til it became a tale I told myself
Within each waking hour did I guard it well
And for all my holding on
I could not hold for long
When I looked again, it had flown
If only I’d sooner known
The better part of bravery
Is in the letting go
Is in the letting go
Now I am old, full of wonderings
I will not sate this quiet hungering
The things we catch, the things best left alone
And in that gloaming hour, I will homeward go
And for all my holding on
I could not hold for long
‘Cause I am slipping through my fingers like a flame
The only truth that can remain
The better part of bravery
Is in the letting go
The better part of bravery
Is in the letting go
Is in the letting go
Is in the letting go
Is in the letting go

Since the movie also explores themes of power, isolation, and nature, I wanted to share this photo that I captured when I visited Castelo dos Mouros. (Read about it here.)

How do you like the song?

The beautiful and unique vocals paired with the uplifting instrumental parts produce an inspiring song. ❤️

When was the last time that you realized that the path forward required you to let go?

May you have the courage to let go of what you need to in order to move forward in your life! 💚

May you be well! 💜
