Why? (The King of Love Is Dead)

Here’s another edition of the Thursday Evening Post.

In ONE MONTH I have another show coming up! 😄

Here are the details:

I feel SO GRATEFUL for another opportunity to perform! ❤️

This past Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The link will take you to “Proclamation 10884 of January 17, 2025.” In that letter, I was very moved by the statement “May we be inspired by Dr. King’s path and motivated by his legacy, working together to build a world founded on freedom, equality, and justice for all.” 💚

There have been several songs written about Dr. King, including “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and “One Vision.” As I wrote about in the posts about those songs, “Pride (In the Name of Love)” was the first song about Dr. King that I had learned about, and since then, I have been moved listening to other songs written in honor of him.

This week I came across an EXTREMELY moving song about Dr. King that I had never heard before. Here is “Why? (The King of Love Is Dead)” by Nina Simone.

Lyrics:

Once upon this planet earth
Lived a man of humble birth
Preaching love and freedom for his fellow men
He was dreamin’ of the day
Peace would come to Earth to stay
And he spread this message all across the land
Turn the other cheek he’d plead
Love the neighbor was his creed
Pain, humiliation, death
He did not dread
With his bible at his side
From his foes he did not hide
It’s hard to think that this great man is dead
Oh yeah
Will the murders never cease
Are they men or are they beasts?
What do they ever hope, ever hope to gain?
Will my country force them to fall?
Is it too late for us all?
And did Martin Luther King just die in vain?
Cause he’s seen the mountain top
And he knew he could not stop
Always living with the threat of death ahead
Folks you better stop and think
Cause we’re heading for the brink
What will happen now that he is dead?
He was for equality
For all the people, you and me
Full of love and good will
Hate was not his way
He was not a violent man
Tell me folks if you can
Just why, why was he shot down the other day?
He’s seen the mountain top
And he knew he could not stop
Always living with the threat of death ahead
Folks you better stop and think and feel again
For we’re headed for the brink
What’s gonna happen now that the king of love is dead?

What is your reaction to this song?

My favorite part of the song includes the following lines:

He was for equality
For all the people, you and me
Full of love and good will
Hate was not his way

Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all carried more love in our hearts?

What would things be like if we focused on how similar we all are as opposed to our differences?

What would it be like if we all lived our lives being the best version of ourselves?

May we be inspired by Dr. King to live a life of love. 💙

If you’d like to support my mission to share my passion for music with the world and spread joy, love, and positivity, you can do so here. Thank you! ❤️
